Abstract

At this time in history it is important to recognize that the capricious link between coronary atherosclerosis and clinical events has created a considerable degree of controversy for valid clinical researchers as well as basic science investigators concerning the underlying pathophysiology of myocardial infarction and sudden death. With regard to myocardial infarction, it is perplexing to discover that in one study 37% of coroners’ cases of individuals who had never experienced coronary heart disease and died of other unrelated causes manifested one or major coronary arterial occlusions at autopsy (Baroldi, Falzi, and Mariani, 1979). Thus, a pool of individuals is to be found within society who live out normal life expectancies devoid of subjective or objective clinical evidence of ischemic heart disease yet possess one or more major coronary occlusions.
