The Use of Short-Term Bioassays to Monitor the Environmental Impact of Land Treatment of Hazardous Wastes

Short-Term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures III

Part of the book series: Environmental Science Research ((ESRH,volume 27))

Abstract

The feasibility of using a battery of short-term bioassays for the detection of mutagens and potential carcinogens released into the environment as a result of land treatment of hazardous waste is being investigated. Land treatment is the incorporation of a waste into the upper layer of soil resulting in the degradation or attenuation of hazardous waste constituents. EPA (1980) regulations state that a waste cannot be applied to the soil unless the waste is rendered less hazardous or nonhazardous by chemical or biological reactions in the soil. Biological analysis provides the only means of demonstrating a reduction in hazardous characteristics since chemical analysis fails to account for the Interactions of the components of a complex mixture, the production of mutagenic metabolites via degradative pathways, and the chemical combination of nontoxic precursors to form mutagenic compounds.
