Abstract
When a group of mothers in Lagos were asked why they practiced sexual abstinence during lactation, the replies of the majority of both parents referred to the need for “the child to develop well” and also “to prevent the child from becoming ill”. Asked if they would like the custom changed, the most frequent answer (29.6 percent) was that they would not because “it would adversely affect the child1s health” (1).
