In addition to those peptides previously discussed, a number of others have been isolated from the central nervous system and found to have a distinct effect upon behavior or upon the regulation of metabolic and vegetative functions. While the list of identified CNS peptides has been rapidly growing, there is an accompanying uncertainty about their functional importance within the brain. Some appear to have a very specialized action in the brain, in addition to a general endocrine-like effect beyond the confines of the CNS.
