Abstract
The feedback system that is responsible for the regulation of thyroid activity can be divided into three components: the hypothalamus, producing thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH); the thyrotrope cells of the anterior pituitary, secreting thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH); and the thyroid gland itself, which produces two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). In addition, the thyroid gland has an autoregulatory control mechanism that depends upon the amount of iodine stored in the gland.
