Abstract

This paper makes the following points about urban systems analysis, in the spirit of improving its usefulness and extending its range:

  1. 1.

Systems analysis is encumbered with certain dysfunctional myths, which impede its effective use in policy-making.

  2. 2.

It is applicable at different levels, which present different environments, and call for different methods of analysis.

  3. 3.

There are other competing and complementary disciplines and perspectives that can profitably be embraced by systems analysis; hence, the education of systems analysts needs reform.
