Planetary Nebulae

Atoms in Astrophysics

Abstract

The importance of planetary nebulae in astronomy is well-known. Stars are believed to evolve from red giants into white dwarfs through ejection of a planetary nebula shell. This phase of stellar evolution is relatively rapid (10,000 yr), implying dramatic changes in the nucleus of the nebula which are still poorly understood. Since they have much of their visual emission concentrated in a few narrow lines (e.g., [O III] λλ4959, 5007), planetary nebulae are also valuable tracers of Galactic structure.
