Abstract
“Quake kills at least 35 in California,” reads the headline in the Baltimore Sun for 10 February 1971. “Grain elevator explodes, causing 30 million dollars worth of damage” is the news from Corpus Christi, Texas, for 7 April 1981 (Fig. 1). These examples represent one way in which fracture enters our daily lives. To most people the word fracture connotes calamities and disasters; the roof of a public building collapsed by the weight of ice and snow (Fig. 2); a window smashed by a carelessly kicked ball; a helicopter brought down by a fatigued rotor; a finger broken in a basketball game. Yet a world without fracture would be quite different from that in which we live. Unbreakable eggshells would mean not only no omelettes or crepes but also, presumably, no birds. Unbreakable ice would leave many northern ports inaccessible through much of the winter. And, though many of us would willingly forgo mowing the lawn if grass were uncuttable, being unable to bite into a crisp apple or a succulent pear would certainly be a pleasure sorely missed.
