Abstract
A great many studies of the properties of surfactant solutions, for example studies of the surface tension, micelle forming properties, solubility and solubilization, have been performed extensively using various methods, but for the most part they have been performed at atmospheric pressure, due to the restriction of the practical use of surfactant, and presumably due to the apparent difficulty in constructing the apparatus necessary for measurement under high pressure. Nevertheless, some researchers who have recognized the usefulness of the application of pressure to solution systems of surfactants have dealt successfully with these difficulties in their contributions to the field. In order to describe the thermodynamic properties of a given solution system, three variables are needed: these are temperature, pressure and composition. Complete thermodynamic information can be obtained by studying what happens to the solution under changes in pressure, as well as under changes in temperature and composition. The most important specific information afforded by studying the effect of pressure is the change in volume, which is the conjugate extensive thermodynamic variable with respect to pressure.
