Near-Infrared and Heat Capacity Investigations of the State of Water in Surfactant and Alcohol Solutions

  • Chapter
Solution Behavior of Surfactants

Abstract

The state of water in surfactant solutions and in various alcohol-water mixtures has been investigated using near-infrared spectroscopy, flow densimetry and flow heat capacity calorimetry. The surfactant systems studied thus far comprise solutions of the anionic amphiphiles C2H5COONa, C7H15COONa, C11H23COONa, C8H17SO4Na and C12H25SO4Na over concentration ranges extending close to their solubility limit. The properties of water solubilized in n-alkanols were also examined over the miscibility ranges for the following linear alcohols: CH30H, C2H50H, C3H7OH, C4H9OH, C5H11OH, C6H13OH, C8H17OH and C10H21OH.
