Abstract
The critical micellar concentration (CMC) of aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) containing different amounts of acetone has been determined at 25°and 40° C by means of surface tensiometric measurements. Experimental parameters such as the standard free energy(ΔG °m ), enthalpy (ΔH °m ) and entropy of micellization (ΔS °m ) were also determined. The experimental results indicate that: 1) micelle formation is somewhat enhanced by the rise in temperature and 2) acetone has inhibitory effect on the formation of micelles of CTAB. This inhibitory effect increases as a function of the acetone concentration and it becomes total as the mole fraction of acetone approaches 0.076 (25% by volume). The effect on micellization and the observed changes in ΔG °m , ΔH °m and ΔS °m can be explained in terms of interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, between water and acetone resulting in a decrease of hydrophobic forces in the ternary system.
