Abstract

A salient development in the U. S. today that bears on value questions about the family and children is the trend toward more freedom in sexual matters. At a time one perceptive journalist (Wolfe, 1976) has cleverly analyzed as the ‘Me Decade’, even more stress is being put on individual autonomy and choice, perhaps even whim. Some social psychologists and sociologists have held that we are already the most individualistic of peoples, and they view our individualism as too extreme (Slater, 1970; Lasch, 1979). Many are claiming today that they should be free to use their sexual organs as they choose. Sexual relations between and among consenting adults appear to occur more frequently today, that is with fewer legal and moral restraints than in the past. People are less reluctant to discuss their sex lives publicly. Sexual relations between teenagers of ever tenderer years seem also on the increase.
