Abstract

As I understand Professor Schoeman’s paper, he seems to be making three main points: (1) the usual analysis of parent-child relationships in terms of rights and obligations does not do justice to the nature of the relationship; (2) an analysis which realizes the importance of intimacy (i.e., relationships which involve sharing ourselves with others) in the parent-child relationship more adequately captures the essential nature of the relationship; and (3) relationships of intimacy, because they require privacy and autonomy, are best maintained and fostered when coercive state intervention is prevented.
