Giardiasis

  • Chapter

Abstract

Giardiasis in humans is caused by a flagellated protozoan Giardia lamblia first described by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1681. The organism is a common cause of diarrhea, especially chronic and/or recurrent disease, in developing countries where generally both sanitation and personal hygiene are poor. With today’s ease of air travel, however, giardiasis is being seen with increasing frequency in North America. About 4.1% of stool specimens submitted to a state public health laboratory in the United States were found to contain Giardia lamblia, indicating the magnitude of the problem (Center for Disease Control, 1978). About 35 years ago, the trophozoite of Giardia lamblia was considered a commensal of the gastrointestinal tract. On the basis of evidence obtained in a number of epidemiologic studies and experiments in animal models, it is clear that Giardia is pathogenic. Giardia lamblia is now regarded as the commonest intestinal parasite in North America, which, although not fatal, can cause a lot of misery, malabsorption, and debilitation. Giardiasis is relatively easy to treat. The physician should keep a high index of suspicion to diagnose this disorder; otherwise the disease might be missed and take a serious turn, necessitating referral to a regional hospital and consultation with a specialist.
