Issues in Patient Compliance

  • Chapter

Abstract

The literature on compliance is extensive, and an exhaustive review of its substance would probably only have the singular effect of forcing Peter Suedfeld to consider revising his publication (1975) on the benefits of boredom. Reviews of the compliance literature have recently been published (Haynes, Taylor, & Sackett, 1979: Stuart & Davidson, 1981) for those who wish to learn from the details. I would prefer instead to draw attention to some important issues of this literature. In doing so we must also note some favored “hobbyhorses”* that need to be either exorcized or written about (depending on your verbal acuity).
