Health Care Psychology for Children

Handbook of Clinical Health Psychology

Abstract

Pediatric psychology combines aspects of several disciplines in the delivery of health care to children and their families. This field came into existence primarily to fill an observed need: pediatric physicians are confronted with a large number of problems that require a comprehensive medical-psychological treatment approach. For example, in a study of pediatric practices, only 12% of all patients presented problems that were considered purely physical; 36% had problems that were considered to be psychological; and the remaining 52% had problems that were both physical and psychological in nature (Duff, Rowe, & Anderson, 1973). As a result of such demands in their actual practice, pediatricians are becoming cognizant of the emotional and psychological aspects of the problems they are called on to treat. Concomitantly, psychologists are discovering the varied types of psychopathology related to organic illnesses as well as the utility of behavioral interventions for some medical disorders.
