Comparative Mutagenicity of Mitomycin C

  • Chapter
Comparative Chemical Mutagenesis

Abstract

Mitomycin C (MC) was first isolated from Streptomyces caesipitosus (1). It was demonstrated to have antibiotic and antitumor properties. Closely related antibiotics, designated mitomycin A and B and porfiromycin have also bee isolated (2). Mitomycins are colored, basic substances forming reddish-violet, plate or needle-shaped crystals. The antibiotic family was described as having unique, naturally occurring structural configurations, in that it represents the first recorded example of the formation by a microbial system of an aziridine group, the pyrrol-(1,2-a)- indole ring system, an aminobenzoquinone, and a pyrrolizine. The common mitomycin nucleus is termed Mitosane. The different compounds only vary by minor substituent groupings (3).
