Abstract

Engineers at Citroën have always been encouraged to be bold in their thinking, even though the commercial history of the company suggests that boldness can sometimes lead to financial instability. André Citroën was the first automobile manufacturer to make front wheel drive cars in large-scale production. All Citroëns since 1934 have been traction avant and it is inconceivable that they will ever be otherwise. Even though Citroën did fail financially in the 1930s, when an injection of money from the Michelin Co. kept them in business, the bold approach to engineering design was not abandoned.
