Abstract

Relaxin is a low molecular weight peptide hormone (6000 daltons) with multiple biological effects during pregnancy in mammals. It relaxes the pubic symphysis, causes inhibition of uterine contractions, softens the cervix and stimulates mammary gland development. While it has been identified in several non-mammalian species, its physiological role in these is unclear.
