Critical Behaviour in Interfaces

  • Chapter
Phase Transitions Cargèse 1980

Abstract

In these lectures I am going to talk about problems involving an interface between two discrete thermodynamic phases. In the lectures of Dr. Beysens and Dr. Moldover we saw examples of such interfaces and they are very familiar objects in at least two contexts: the almost planar interface between two phases in equilibrium and the almost spherical interface associated with the decay of a metastable state by the formation of critical droplets of the favoured phase. In theoretical terms we will be dealing with one-component order parameters so the ideas should be applicable to the liquid-vapour system, to binary fluids and, with some possible reservations, to other systems such as domain walls in uniaxial magnets. There are two main characteristic effects of thermal fluctuations on which I wish to focus.
