Components of environment: more about the ecological web

In chapters 3–7 it was appropriate to mention a number of interactions which, although they did not involve the animal directly, nevertheless influenced its chance to survive and reproduce through their influence on the activity of a component of environment. Because their influence is indirect, these interactions were considered to be taking place in the outer reaches of the ecological web. In this chapter I develop this idea a little further.
