Abstract

Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) obtained from ship and satellite measurements in the Arabian Sea are analyzed for the summer monsoons of 1975, 1976 and 1977. Satellite derived temperature fields are found to have lower rms variability and to be better adapted to large scale pattern identification while ship observations have greater mean accuracy, resolve finer scales near the coastal boundaries and show larger rms variability. Mean satellite retrievals differ seasonally from ship reports. Largest differences are found in spring before the monsoon; minima occur in fall.

Results indicate that the summer monsoon seasonal SST differences are influenced principally by the April state of the ocean rather than the August mean cooling. For the three years studied, Arabian Sea April–August SST difference varies from 0.8°C to 1.7°C.
