Abstract

The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the TIROS-N generation of NOAA’s polar-orbiting satellites detects emitted radiation in the window channels 3.55–3.93 and 10.5–11.5 µm, and later instruments will add a third at 11.5–12.5 µm. Atmospheric corrections using various combinations of brightness temperatures from all the AVHRR channels have been simulated by use of atmospheric transmittance models. These calculations employed a large set of seasonally and geographically diverse atmospheric profiles of temperature and moisture from radiosondes. The results of preliminary tests of a two-window method using AVHRR measurements from NOAA-6 were verified against buoy and XBT temperatures and yielded root mean square differences of about 1.1 K. High resolution, contoured charts of absolute sea surface temperature are presented.
