Abstract

Behavioral medicine is a somewhat vaguely defined, interdisciplinary science that integrates both behavioral and biomedical knowledge. Conceptually, the field is still in an infantile state, as reflected by numerous attempts (Masur, 1979; Pomerleau, 1979; Pomerleau & Brady, 1979b; Schwartz & Weiss, 1977, 1978a, b) to identify those clinical and research activities relevant to the area, and to differentiate behavioral medicine from similar approaches, such as medical psychology and psychosomatic medicine.

Over 99 percent of us are born healthy and made sick as a result of personal misbehavior and environmental conditions. -Knowles, 1977
