An In Vitro Approach for Investigating the Regulation of the Corpora Allata during Larval-Pupal Metamorphosis

  • Chapter
Current Topics in Insect Endocrinology and Nutrition

Abstract

According to the now classical scheme for the hormonal control of insect metamorphosis, the type of molt an insect undergoes is determined by the concentration of juvenile hormone (JH) at a critical period before the molt (see Gilbert, 1964). Generally, it is believed that larval development occurs in the presence of high concentrations of JH, and that in the presence of intermediate and negligible concentrations of the hormone, pupal and adult development occur, respectively. Determinations of JH hemolymph titers during the postembryonic development of a wide variety of holometabolous insects have tended to support this idea. Logically, the mechanisms involved in the regulation of the JH titer would involve modulation of its synthesis, its transport in the hemolymph, catabolism and excretion.
