Abstract
The elucidation of the neuroendocrine control mechanisms operating in insects started with the discovery by Kopec (1917) of a pupation hormone in the brain of a lepidopteran (Pieris). The contributions made by other pioneers in this active area of research, one of whom we honor by this symposium, have been centered around their laboratory insects of choice, Calliphora, Rhodnius, and Cecropia among them. Each of these efforts has yielded specific insights, and for a time it seemed difficult to recognize common denominators in the multitude of control mechanisms geared to the special needs of different insect species.
