Abstract
It was 35 years after Gottfried Fraenkel ligated his first blowfly larva (Fraenkel, 1935) that I got the opportunity to work in his laboratory. By this time, in 1970, the ligation experiment had become generally known as the Calliphora-test, and had served as the major bioassay for the isolation and identification of the molting hormone, ecdysone (Butenandt and Karlson, 1954; Huber and Hoppe, 1965). When I joined the laboratory, the validity of the test was being challenged by a group at Harvard (Ohtaki et al., 1968), and one of my first tasks was to reinvestigate certain of the test conditions (Fraenkel and Zdarek, 1970).
