Abstract

That the blastocyst and the uterus exchange information prior to implantation is suggested by the greater increase in secretion of progesterone in pregnant than in pseudopregnant rabbits on Days 4 to 6 and by the secondary rise of CG-LH-like material in the serum of pregnant rabbits on Days 3 and 4 postcoitum (Singh and Adams, 1978; Varma et al., 1979). The maintenance of the corpus luteum of pregnancy in the presence of blastocysts in the oviduct and after transplantation of the blastocyst under the kidney capsule in the rabbit suggests that the blastocyst may be the source of luteotropic stimuli prior to implantation (Zielmaker and Verhamme, 1978). Dickmann and Dey (1974) suggested that steroidogenesis in the rabbit blastocyst may be activated by a gonadotropic material of blastocyst origin.
