Uterine DNA Polymerase Acquisition of Responsiveness to Estrogen during Postnatal Development of the Rat

  • Chapter
Cellular and Molecular Aspects of Implantation

Abstract

Although the striking growth response of the rat uterus to estrogen has been long recognized (Astwood, 1938; Mueller, 1953), our understanding of the mechanism of this process remains incomplete. Evidence from a number of other steroid responsive tissues suggests that steroids bring about their effects on specific protein synthesis by increasing the concentrations of mRNA for these particular proteins (Chan et al. 1973; Schimke et al., 1975; Tata, 1976; Kurtz and Feigelson, 1977), probably by transcriptional regulation (Swaneck et al., 1979). Comparable analysis of estrogen action on rat uterus has been complicated by the absence of equally suitable marker proteins. However, the available evidence indicates that similar mechanisms do operate in this organ (Katzenellenbogen and Gorski, 1972).
