Aminograms in Various Types of Liver Disease

Abstract

The concentration of amino acids in the serum is significantly altered in various liver diseases (Fisher, 1975; Iber, 1957; Mellinkoff, 1955; Ning, 1967; Rosen, 1977). While there is considerable information about the amino acid concentrations in cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy, there is only limited information about the serum amino acid concentration in liver diseases other than cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy (Mellinkoff, 1955; Ning, 1967). Accordingly, we studied the amino acid concentrations in the serum of patients with different liver diseases for the following purposes:

  1. (a)

To recognize consistent derangements, if any, of the amino acid concentrations in different types of liver disease.

  2. (b)

To make a comparative study of the amino acid concentrations in various liver diseases.

  3. (c)

To define the diagnostic and prognostic significance of alterations in amino acid concentrations by correlating these changes with the severity of the histological findings.
