Recent Changes in Identification and Classification of Some Anaerobes

  • Chapter
Anaerobic Bacteria

Abstract

Contrary to the belief of many, Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology has no official taxonomic status but does affect taxonomy in that taxonomic status can become established on the basis of common usage. Bergey’s Manual is one of the manuals commonly used when persons are trying to identify organisms or attempting to establish changes in nomenclature. Therefore, it seems appropriate to review changes in nomenclature of known taxa that have occurred since the eighth edition of Bergey’s Manual was published and to discuss the reasons for some of these changes. A few of the new species that have been described recently, particularly those isolated from clinical infections or species that are similar to clinically important species, also will be discussed.
