Superconductivity, Long-Range Magnetic Order, and Crystal-Field Effects in RERh4B4 Compounds

  • Chapter
Crystalline Electric Field and Structural Effects in f-Electron Systems

Abstract

The recent discovery of both superconducting and ferromagnetic phase transitions in the ternary rare earth (RE) compounds RERh4B4,1 in which the RE ions form an ordered sublattice, has given impetus to a re-examination of the question of coexistence of these two long-range phenomena. Because the superconducting (Tc) and magnetic (TM) transition temperatures in the RERh4B4 compounds are of comparable magnitude, these compounds are ideal candidates for studies of the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism. The fact that TM displays a peak at RE = Dy rather than at RE = Gd, as would be expected for an isostructural series of metallic compounds which order via the indirect RKKY exchange interaction, indicates that other factors such as crystalline electric field (CEF), magnetoelastic, and probably even dipolar interactions affect the superconducting and magnetic properties of the RERh4B4 compounds.
