Abstract

The crystalline electric field in rare-earth intermetallic compounds has been considered to be important for many years1, yet the relevance of the roles played by the lattice of ions and by the conduction electrons is still little understood. As it happens, few rare-earth intermetallic compounds have been studied across the whole series except for certain whose character can not be claimed to be strongly metallic2.
