Abstract

Understanding the magnetic properties of concentrated 4f electron systems continues to be a challenging problem. The difficulties can be traced to the presence of a comparatively large number of occupied crystal field levels in the lowest angular momentum manifold of the rare earth ion. The interplay of the static and dynamic crystalline field with the direct interion interaction gives rise to a great variety of interesting phenomena.
