Abstract
The intermetallic compound CePd3 is currently of interest because it is thought to be1 an example of a system of intermediate valence room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Both lattice constant2 and magnetic susceptibility3 studies suggest a Ce ion valence of 3.45. The susceptibility3 is remarkably temperature independent varying gradually from 1.1 × 10−3 emu/mole at 300K to about 1.5 × 10−3 at 20 K, followed by an upturn below about 20 K which is thought to be due to residual magnetic impurities. This behavior is typical of systems thought to have intermediate valence such as CeSn3, α Ce, YbAl2 etc. The electrical resistivity of CePd3 is rather striking. Upon cooling from 300 K the resistivity rises from about 125µΩcm to a maximum value of 170µΩcm at 100 K and then drops dramatically to a value of about 10µΩcm at low temperatures. Qualitatively similar but far less pronounced behavior is observed for CeSn3 which has a maximum of 15µΩcm at about 200 K.
