Abstract

There are some conditions which should be strictly fulfilled in order to successfully carry out crystal field experiments on actinide systems using neutron spectroscopy. Firstly, the overall crystal field splitting should not exceed the energies of thermal neutrons available from reactors. Secondly, one should concentrate on materials where exchange interactions which are known to cause the serious perturbation in observing crystal field transitions are negligible, i.e. on materials that order magnetically at low temperature or do not order at all. Thirdly, one should choose materials, for which there is experimental evidence for localized character of 5f electrons.
