Metallographic Evaluation of Multi-Material Products
Multi-material products have become more commonly used in many high technology industries. With these products, properties can be obtained which neither the component materials individually nor the alloyed combinations can achieve. A composite material is a classic example; the final product has the strength of the fibers plus the toughness of the matrix. Another example of a multi-material product which combines the best of its material components is a plated part where the substrate material possesses good mechanical properties but lacks corrosion resistance, and the plating material provides the required corrosion protection. Metallographic examination of the interface between the fiber and the matrix, or the substrate and the plating, will reveal much information about the quality of the product.
