Correlation of Optical and Paramagnetic Properties of Neodymium (4f3) in the Solid State

Abstract

The optical absorption spectra of neodymium compounds at 4 K, can be reproduced using, on the complete basis of 364 ∣ SLJMJ> kets in the configuration, an hamiltonian which involves at least 12 free-atom parameters (Racah’s, Trees α and ß, Judd’s six Tk three-body interaction parameters and the spin orbit coupling constant) and the crystal field hamiltonian written in Wybourne’s formalism. Recent examples in the literature are to be found in references (1) to (3).
