Spectra and Redox Photochemistry of Crown Ether Complexes of Lanthanides

Complexation of lanthanides by crown ethers is shown to cause remarkable spectroscopic changes in charge-transfer, f-d and f-f transitions. Furthermore, the quantum yields for photoreduction of Eu(III) in ethanol are increased dramatically in the presence of 18-crown-6. The possibilities for using crown ethers to stabilize unstable oxidation states of lanthanides and actinides is discussed.
