Abstract
This first symposium brought together many of the most active students of aquatic oligochaete biology, but inevitably several people were prevented from attending by problems of health, distance, finance and workload. Among those were three colleagues to whom greetings were sent in their absence, Dr, S. Hrabě (Brno), Dr. N. Sokolskaya (Moscow) and Mr. J. Hiltunen (Ann Arbor). Dr. D.H. Di Persia and Dr. M. Loden were eventually obliged to communicate their papers via Dr. W.J. Harman, and the editor had to attempt to present the work which Mr. Hiltunen would have covered had he been able to attend.
