Abstract

Life is full of unexpected happenings. Who could predict that one April morning in 1919 I happened to be in the entrance hall of the Institute of Physiology of the old Karolinska Institute when Professor Johansson came out of his room with a volume of Journal of Physiology of 1908 open in his hand. He handed over the book to me and said: “Read this paper; it is very interesting”. The paper was about the all-or-none principle in skeletal muscle and the author was Keith Lucas of Cambridge (Lucas, 1908).
