Abstract

Dr Esposti, opening the discussion, observed that the urinary tract is lined with transitional cell epithelium or urothelium, exhibiting several (up to seven or eight) layers of cells. The exfoliated urothelial cells can easily be examined for cytological diagnosis, using urinary sediment. However, experience at Radiumhemmet (Esposti et al, 1970) showed that cellular preservation was better and cytological details easier analysed in bladder washings, using 0.9% NaCl solution. The centrifuged cell material, fixed with methanol-acetic acid mixture, was stained according to the Papanicolaou method. As the majority of the tumours of the urinary tract are of urothelial origin and occur most often in the bladder, cytological diagnosis has proved useful in the management of tumours of the urinary bladder.
