Abstract
Ecological impact evaluation should be concurrent with technological development and economic assessment of the feasibility of exploiting a new biosaline resource. The ecological questions focus on both the internal and external functions of the system. The internal functions are processes such as primary productivity, secondary productivity, resource storage, decomposition and mineral cycling. Among the factors which determine the degreee to which the natural state of these processes will be altered are: the type of resource being exploited, the buffering capacity of the ecosystem, the nature of the expolitation technology and the seasonal timing of the activity.
