Analysis of the Urinary Steroids from a Pathological Pregnancy by Liquid-Gel Chromatography and Gas-Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Recent Developments in Mass Spectrometry in Biochemistry and Medicine

Abstract

We have previously described a method (1) employing liquid-gel chromatography on Sephadex LH-20, gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the analysis of the principal C18, C19 C21 steroids excreted during a normal pregnancy. This paper describes the application of such a method, to the study of the alteration in steroid production and metabolism which occur during a pathological pregnancy. The mother, who had a history of adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency, was delivered of a normal female infant at term. The steroids excreted during the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy were analysed, identified and quantitated.
