Excitation of Cd(53P1) and Cd(51P1) in Na+-Cd Collisions: Optical Polarization and Population of Magnetic Sublevels

  • Chapter
Coherence and Correlation in Atomic Collisions

Abstract

Cross sections for excitation of Cd(53P1) and Cd(51P1) in Na+-Cd collisions have been measured by a combined crossed beam and optical technique. In the investigated energy range, from a few eV to ∼3 keV, both cross sections show structure, and excitation of Cd(1P1) is larger (∼9 × 10-15 cm2 at 1 keV) than excitation of Cd(3P1) (∼2.5 × 10-15 cm2 at 1 keV). From the measurement of polarization of the fluorescence lines, cross sections for population of the magnetic sublevels have also been obtained, and considerable anisotropy has been found only for Cd(1P1). These results are discussed with reference to the previously investigated Na+-Hg system.
