Abstract

Collisions of very heavy ions are discussed as a means of investigating quantum electrodynamics in the presence of strong external fields. The action of the combined Coulomb field of the closely approaching nuclei leads to strong binding of the inner electron shells and to large induced transitions. The resulting mechanisms for the production of positrons are discussed in detail and compared with recent experiments.
