The Postcollision Interaction as a Manifestation of Many-Electron Correlations

  • Chapter
Coherence and Correlation in Atomic Collisions

Abstract

A discussion is given of special phenomena that occur in inelastic scattering of electrons by atoms or in inner-shell photoionization when the incoming electron energy is near the threshold energy of a nonstationary excited state. It is demonstrated that the interaction of the slow electron with the vacancy in the atom (the so-called “post-collision interaction”) significantly affects the characteristics of the process. The inclusion of PCI in calculations of specific processes has achieved acceptable agreement with experimental data.
