Abstract
The historic approach to this aspect of direct methods was analytical (Hauptman and Karle, 1953, 1956, 1959; Karle and Hauptman, 1961) and has been authoritatively reviewed by Hauptman (1972). Here the approach relies on spatial concepts and deals directly with phases and phase planes. It was developed by the author for teaching and to provide more penetrating insight into certain problems that behaved unexpectedly. It is hoped it will help those who wish to have a better understanding of what they are doing but have had difficulty with the analytical papers.
