Abstract
Although the reactions of carbenes and nitrenes in solution are not free of complications, it is usually possible to find relatively straightforward paths between reactants and products. In contrast, the behavior of these species, especially the aromatic ones, in the gas phase is extremely complicated, and even innocent-looking products, which may be formed in high yields, can have been produced by a long history of rearrangements and automerizations. Over the last several years a multitude of reaction mechanisms has been postulated by various research groups, and one after the other has, in turn, been found to be either insufficient or totally wrong. Even mechanisms which appeared to be solidly established on the basis of labeling experiments have had to be abandoned.
