Abstract
It is probably in this field of unsaturated hydrocarbons polymerization by transition metal complexes, that coordination catalysis has most convincingly demonstrated its amazing ability to govern the rates and particularly the selectivities of complicated organic reactions. This is true at four different levels
-
in terms of selectivity towards different substrates;
-
in terms of regioselectivity in a given molecule;
-
in terms of stereoselectivity and enantioselectivity;
-
and finally in terms of a very recent developement for which we have coined the name “chronoselectivity” or, as suggested by Professor T.H. Esch, “troposteric control”: in other words, the “coding” ability of a catalyst controlling the statistics of placement of two different units in the same polymer chain. This might be the most refined type of control to data, since it includes at the same time both a structural and a kinetic programming.
